Da je kniževna istina daleko univerzalnija i uzvišenija od istorijske dokazuje roman Deca ponoći Salmana Ruždija koji predstavlja alegorijsku priču o rođenju moderne indijske nacije. Diskurs je protkan brojnim istorijskim podacima koji kroz autorovu vizuru dobijaju sasvim drugačiji smisao. Stvarnost na taj način dobija novi oblik, a svi postupci tumačenja i razumevanja dela poprimaju originalnu perspektivu. Problematika prirode sećanja i insistiranje na inividualnosti čine glavnu okosnicu kako istorisjkog tako i modernog, postkolonijalnog konteksta u koji je smeštena radnja.
